Practice Policies

Our charges are based on the number and complexity of your problems and reflect the customary fees of physicians in our community. You may pay by cash, check or credit card. We accept most major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.

All refill requests should be done through your Pharmacy. Your pharmacy will contact our office to authorize refills. Please allow 2 business days to process all routine refills. No refills will be approved for patients who require follow-up visits or have not been seen in over one year.

The following are current financial policies in effect for patients of James River Dermatology:

  • To help us keep accurate records, please let us know of any changes in your name, address, phone number or insurance coverage. This information can be updated at anytime using our secure Patient Portal service. Before your appointment, please discuss your insurance coverage with us. If we are contracted with your insurance company, we will handle your claim according to our agreement with them. Please check with your insurance company about your co-pay before your visit. All co-pays, deductibles, and co-insurance payments are due at the time of your visit.
  • If an HMO insures you, you must provide us with a referral authorization at the time of your visit. Without a referral, you will be responsible for all charges, as we have no way to invoice your insurance. As a courtesy to our Medicare patients, we will be happy to bill Medicare for you. However, you are responsible for the 20% co-payment and any remaining deductible. If you have a secondary policy, we will be glad to bill that for you as well.
  • You must present a current active insurance card and a photo ID at the time of your visit. If you do not have your insurance card, it may be necessary to reschedule your appointment. If your insurance lapses or you do not have active coverage, you are responsible for all charges incurred while you are without insurance.
  • To cancel an appointment, you must give at least 24-hour notice, or a $35.00 cancellation fee will be charged.
